Dallas Market Center Touts Increased Lightovation Attendance dfalvey Tue, 07/25/2023 - 08:17

Lightovation experienced an increase in attendance for the summer edition of the show, which ran June 21-24, 2023, according to Dallas Market Center. The show saw a total increase in attendance, and a greater than 50 percent increase in first-time attendees, including lighting retail showrooms and interior designers.

“The summer edition of Lightovation welcomed the industry to Dallas, where the energy was strong, best-selling and new products were showcased, and top retailers were celebrated,” said Cindy Morris, President and CEO of Dallas Market Center.

Among the new and expanded exhibitors were the International Pavilion (TM 4909), home to lighting manufacturers from around the world including new exhibitor wakaNINE, representing several lighting design brands including exemplars in sustainability David Trubridge and PLN Group/Hush out of New Zealand, and Thailand’s Ango. Also new for June was Geo Contemporary (WTC 301) a Brazil-based brand designed by Maurício D’Avila combining high design with high quality and a focus on sustainability. New to the Spectrum Shared Showroom for June 2023 was Millennium Lighting (TM 4432-05,06,07), with exceptional decorative residential and commercial lighting solutions. Among June’s product introduction highlights was Tamara Day for Quorum (TM 3004, 3111) lighting line designed by the Magnolia Network’s “Bargain Mansions” host. The launch included more than 50 designs across three collections, featuring chandeliers, pendants, wall mounts and vanities.

Retailers from all 50 states and more than a dozen countries attended the show, with the strongest attendance gains coming from the southeast U.S. and upper midwest.

Said Janna Gray, owner of Tallahassee Lighting & Décor: “I attended Lightovation because I knew it would be an excellent opportunity to meet with our vendors, to see new trends and products and to meet with other showroom owners. It is an incredibly efficient way to meet with many of our lighting reps in one place, strengthen our relationships and conduct business in a relaxed atmosphere.”

In addition to lighting showroom principals, dozens of lighting professionals attended the show as part of the Light Stars program. These individuals were nominated by their employers and industry partners to recognize their efforts even if they are not normally able to participate in the show. Interior Designer Preview Day and Trend Displays

On Tuesday, June 20, the first Interior Designer Preview Day took place for Lightovation. Participating showrooms were open for a sneak peek by more than 100 members of the interior design community and special programming took place including a Trend Tour from trend expert Patti Carpenter and a special panel discussion with AD 100 Designer Corey Damen Jenkins and HGTV star Breegan Jane, moderated by Rue magazine’s Kelli Lamb. Corey Damen Jenkins and Breegan Jane also provided a glimpse into their creative process via two exclusive trend displays for Lightovation expressing these top designers’ interpretations of trends from Lightovation’s 2023 Trend Report in mood boards inspired by products from Lightovation exhibitors.

Special Events, Showroom of the Year, Lighting After Dark

It wouldn’t be a Lightovation without celebration. Key events included cutting the ribbon on new and expanded showrooms; numerous seminars and panel presentations; receptions for ALA’s Women in Lighting and Young Executives groups, and the Showroom of the Year Awards.

A collaborative program organized by Furniture, Lighting & Decor magazine and Dallas Market Center, the Showroom of the Year Awards honor lighting retailers from throughout North America, with one Showroom of the Year winner in each of three dollar-volume categories, along with three specialty awards. Trend experts Tamara Day and Breegan Jane discovered new products at Lightovation as Style Eyes, the program leveraging the knowledge and taste making skills of social media influencers for their insights and discoveries. Tamara Breegan made selections across the marketplace in lighting as well as home decor.

Celebrity designers Tamara Day and Breegan Jane presented the 14th annual Showroom of the Year Awards on Wednesday, June 21, on the opening day of Lightovation. A collaborative program organized by Furniture, Lighting & Decor and Lightovation host Dallas Market Center, the awards honor lighting retailers from throughout North America, with one Showroom of the Year winner in each of three dollar-volume categories, along with three specialty awards.

“This year’s entrants and finalists put the needs of their customers front and center,” said Diane Falvey, our Editor-in-Chief. “The winners of the 2023 Showroom of the Year Awards showcased an understanding of today’s consumer and the experience they are looking for from lighting retailers. Congratulations!”

From entries and nominations received between December 2022 and February 2023, there were five finalists in each dollar-volume category: Revenue Under $2 Million, Revenue $2 Million to $5 Million, and Revenue $5 Million and Over. All 15 Showroom of the Year finalists were also eligible for three specialty awards: Outstanding Merchandising Display, Exceptional Community Involvement and Social Media Star.

Finalists for the 2023 Showroom of the Year Awards, honoring outstanding lighting retailers across North America, have been decided. The annual awards program, now celebrating its 14th year, is presented by Furniture, Lighting & Decor magazine and Lightovation at Dallas Market Center.

Each year, showrooms are judged on a number of criteria, including merchandising display, marketing and advertising, customer service and engagement, employee education and motivation, and community involvement. Five Showroom of the Year finalists are named in each of three dollar-volume categories. The winners will be announced at a 6pm ceremony on Wednesday, June 21, during Lightovation at Dallas Market Center. The event is open to all participants in Lightovation, which runs June 21-24.

“This year’s Showroom of the Year finalists have exhibited what it takes to put customers first,” says Diane Falvey, Editor-in-Chief of Furniture, Lighting & Decor. “From customer service to education, product selection and pivotal roles in their communities, our lighting showroom finalists this year exemplify retail excellence. ”

Again this year, 50 percent of the scoring for the Social Media Star Award will be determined by “likes” posted to finalist profiles within the Showroom of the Year Social Media Star Event on Furniture, Lighting & Decor’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/furniturelightingdecor), starting May 2 and continuing through May 12. Official judges’ scores complete the remaining 50 percent of scoring for that category.

Judging this year’s competition is an esteemed panel of industry professionals: Patrick Keiser, Founder of Heart on Mainstreet, a non-profit organization designed to help independent retailers thrive; Michelle Sherrier, Founder of MC Design Collaboration and The Retail Whore Podcast; and Erinn Valencich, Founder of and Lead Designer at Erinn V. Design Group, Product Designer and Founder of StyleRow, a project management platform for interior designers.

Lightovation has announced details for its winter 2023 edition, which will run Tuesday, January 10 – Friday, January 13, overlapping with the end of the winter Total Home & Gift Market (January 4-10) and featuring a Preview Day on Monday, January 9. This show will include new collections, trend installations and insights, technical expertise, and celebrations across a 1-million-square-foot lighting marketplace.

“Retail decision makers from coast to coast and around the world will once again demonstrate that Lightovation is the center of commerce and community for the business of lighting,” said Cindy Morris, President and CEO of Dallas Market Center. “We are presenting many new exhibitors and collections in January that balance style with function plus we will debut a new trend report and installations to help guide retailers and inspire their business for the new year.”

Lightovation Exhibitor News and Events

Technology leader Samsung Electronics America (TM 4604) has relocated from the World Trade Center and expanded to showcase its modern, smart home categories from lighting to sound. Dallas is the only market center in the U.S. to have a Samsung presence. Hunter Fan Company has also relocated and expanded in TM 3135. And Lucas + McKearn will open its own showroom (TM 4535) after exhibiting in the Spectrum shared showroom previously.

Elegant Lighting (TM 3050) has more than doubled its square footage with new additional showrooms in TM 3060 and TM 3420. And Quorum International (TM 3004, 3111) has expanded with a new dedicated showroom for its Oxygen brand in TM 3006. Livex (TM 4503) has also expanded for January 2023 Lightovation. And Quoizel (TM 3200) has expanded its space to include a display for SKYX, makers of the innovative SkyPlug technology that allows ceiling fixtures to be plugged in as easily as portable lamps.

New showrooms include Ashore (TM 3383), B&S Lighting (TM 3640), Innovations Lighting (TM 4904), Page One Lighting (TM 3920) while new to shared showroom Spectrum is Electric Mirror (TM 4432-8), Morgan Lighting (TM 4432-18), Rayhil (TM 4432-3), Sarin Energy Solutions (TM 4432-4), Treehouse Lighting (TM 4432-1) and Zastro (TM 4432-2).

Also debuting in January is the International Pavilion, a new collection of global brands showing for the first time. Inside Trade Mart 4909 will be the following companies: Zafferano America, with award-winning lighting and glassware designs of Federico de Majo of Venice, Italy; Aldo Bernardi, with interior and exterior lighting from Treviso, Italy; and LOFFKo Group, an agency for high-quality Italian lighting brands including Modo Luce, In-Es.Artdesign, Sitia, MATTEOPALA, codutti, and Prodigal Leathers. A grand opening celebration will take place on Tuesday afternoon.

Familiar exhibitors with new locations for January include Designers Fountain (TM 4715), Terracotta Designs (TM 3751) and the hotly anticipated new Modern Forms space (TM 4301).

Several Dallas exhibitors will celebrate important milestones that will be shared with customers including AFX, celebrating 85 years; and a 60th anniversary for Sonneman—a Way of Light.

Trend Displays and Presentation

Lightovation will once again present its comprehensive 2023 Trend Report encompassing major directions in home decor, architecture, building and remodeling and how they will impact lighting. The printed report is exclusive for Lightovation attendees to pick up and will be accompanied by new, on-site displays illustrating the trends. 3 p.m., Exciting Applications for LED Tape That Will Maximize Any Interior, presented by ALA

We need functional lighting to perform tasks and illuminate spaces. However, the type of lighting that delivers the most visual impact is non-functional accent or decorative lighting. Architectural detail lighting can enliven a space and set a room apart from others. Accent lighting can draw attention to the nuances of the room, give it greater perceptible size and make it the envy of all who experience it. Architectural detail lighting may be small, but its impact packs a visual punch. Today, that type of architectural detail lighting can also be provided by LED tape. This functional and flexible light source continues to grow in use and importance. In this American Lighting Association session, Jeffrey R. Dross will look at multiple types of applications, with tips and suggestions for installation. After attending this seminar, specifying and employing LED tape and the assorted channels on the market will be substantially easier. The Light Stars program recognizes top retail salespeople who would benefit from the knowledge and networking gained from Lightovation, but would not normally have the opportunity to attend. Entries were judged by an esteemed panel of home and design industry professionals: Jeffrey Alan Marks, interior designer, lighting designer and Principal of Jeffrey Alan Marks Inc.; Robin Baron, interior designer, lighting designer and Principal of Robin Baron Design; and Randy Eller, retail consultant and Owner of Eller Enterprises.

Nominations and entries for the 2023 Showroom of the Year Awards, which are open to all independent lighting retailers in North America, will be accepted starting in December 2022. These awards will be presented at the June 21-24, 2023 edition of Lightovation in Dallas. The next edition of Lightovation will take place January 10-13, 2023, a new Tuesday through Friday date pattern that overlaps the end of the January 4-10 Total Home & Gift Market at Dallas Market Center.
