Occasional Tables

Springhouse Occasional Collection By Wilson Keel for Charleston Forge

Judge’s Comments: "We love the nice overall feel of this collection. The beautiful hammered legs that gently grab the wood top is stunning. The use of space between the base and the top of the tables adds an added visual lightness to the piece. This fresh design approach forges the old black smith look with the modern lifestyle ... it is clean and fresh with the metal supports wrapping the edges of each piece."

Occasional Storage

Swing Bar - Stones by Carl Muller for Elite Modern

Judge’s Comments: "Interesting, clever design with awesome functionality for a bar. We love how the 2 pieces interact with each other creating a strong design visual with the laser cut stone design. The look is modern and sleek, but most of all we truly like the organization on the back side and the ability to gather multiple people into a small space! Impressive ingenuity without compromising great design..."

Modern Spirit By Mike Warren, ISFD, Shannon Lookabill, ISFD and Andrea Otto for Universal Furniture

Judge’s Comments: "We found very nice elements in this collection. We especially love the night table with the iron base, Modern Spirit is a nice collection for youth furniture. This set is clean in look and can work well for either gender. A clean, modern approach to a youth bedroom that can grow with the child. Smart furniture with a purpose."

Local Harvest Casual Dining By Catina Suarez Roscoe, ISFD for Borkholder Furniture

Judge’s Comments: "We felt that Local Harvest Table exhibited a rustic charm that is a fresh new look to farm house design that transcends into modern & cottage. It is made of solid wood with mortise and tenon joinery. The double-leg design adds a nice architectural element that is quite beautiful and the doubled edge of the table in lieu of an apron was also a nice touch. The red oak grain offers warmth and depth to the finish of the collection."

Formal Dining

Hague Dining Table By Thor Taber for Century Furniture

Judge’s Comments: "The Hague Dining table has a bold and seemingly precarious design with its geometric base that appears to be balancing on a solid wood sphere. Updated and creative…A true winner... we loved the mix of finishes along with the modern aesthetic!"

Luke By David Westendorf of James Russell Design for La-Z-Boy

Judge’s Comments: "Luke has a point of view and freshness we have not seen in this category before. This is a whole new era for reclining upholstery. Lighting

Pebble Table Lamp By Mandy Shanahan, ISFD, for Phillips Collection

Judge’s Comments: "A unique, pretty lamp design with an elegant organic form in luxury finishes. We think the use of the mirrors in the attractive, fluid base design gives an illusion of airiness. It exhibits a nice balance of in the brass and mirror materials with proportions that seem to be just right. Using mirrors as the inset for each pebble is a unique design approach that brings additional reflective accents to any space, especially when used in a lamp."

Accessories

Maki Screen By Mark Phillips, ISFD for Phillips Collection

Judge’s Comments: "We love the creativity, flexibility and stunning beauty of these Maki Screens! Particularly its combination of raw nature with a minimal but heavy modern steel frame. The individuality of each root ball makes this a 'one of' purchase each time. A room divider with attitude!"

Iron Frame Chamcha Wood Desk By Mandy Shanahan, ISFD for Phillips Collection

Judge’s Comments: "We really like the simple yet elegant design elements of the Iron Frame Desk. Nice balance between metal and wood system The sustainably sourced wood compliments the metal beautifully. The wood is also finished with natural materials. There is a nice play with volume and form in this design. It is bound to inspire the urban professional user who can sit or stand while working at this desk. A very up to date style reflecting emerging trends in the marketplace."

Home Entertainment

Wright Collection By Jena Hall, ISFD and Ryan Mimick for Twin Star Home

Judge’s Comments: "This Entertainment collection presents a strong, clean look while being up to date in both scale and finish. The openness of the design allows it to be a great focal point for a room without being dominating. Frank Lloyd Wright inspired with a modern twist. We feel that the versatility of this group is also a strong point. An entertainment wall unit with a modern, sleek fireplace. The side tables can be put together and used as a sofa table. Even in a downsized dwelling this product can be used in many ways... Handsome, modern, and well-suited for rooms of all sizes."

Judge’s Comments: "True to Gloster’s Scandinavian roots this chair and ottoman exhibit a mix of style elements work perfectly together. Bringing sophisticated in doors outside. An invitingly beautiful and comfortable chair. The contrast of teak and the raven colored rope is exquisite. The large ottoman could easily serve as an extra seat. This chair and ottoman show a sense of style and confidence that is modern and up to date."

Bedroom

Dominic Metal Canopy Bed By Bernhardt Casegoods Design Team for Bernhardt

Judge’s Comments: "Beautifully done! A unique mix of an industrial influence with elegance in this bed’s post design. The upholstered head and foot boards soften the use of pure metal on the bed frame allowing for a sense of dark romance. The materials used are classic and enduring. We see a fun balance of style, function, and strength with beauty."

Student Award

“The Warden of Wallop Park” Cabinet By Ryan Decker, ISFD; Appalachian State University

Judge’s Comments: '"The Warden of Wallop Park" is quite the unexpected and welcome entry. Everything from the design, to the construction, to the surreal triptych have been executed wonderfully. We really enjoyed the way the drawer handles are the main focal point when the doors are closed, but get lost in the dream like landscape once the doors are opened. This is a fantastic and inspiring piece of furniture. An amazing take-off on the bargueno! Unexpected delightful!"

Maker/Designer Award

Escape Velocity By Owain Harris, ISFD for O.H.Harris Cabinetmaker

Judge’s Comments: "Escape Velocity is an imaginative and technical cabinet design with just a touch of whimsy. The material choices are excellent, we thoroughly enjoy the bees wing pattern on the fumed Eucalyptus. The marquetry on the top and front is very well executed. The finish on this cabinet is also excellent, bringing out the natural beauty of the wood grain. Truly an original work of art by a true craftsman... not a me too... this is quality furniture... worth winning the first."

Maker/Designer Pinnacle Award

Green Leaf Award Sunbury Bed By Michael Showalter for Gat Creek

Judge’s Comments: "The understated proportions and clean lines of this design celebrates the noble, local origins of the materials. The scale and proportions of the bed are welcoming and functional, and the sheer simplicity of the case goods allows the wood grain to remain the strong design element. The lamb’s wool finish is a dream, and harkens back to antiques from Europe, but with a fresh, American interpretation. This design is absolutely timeless and could be placed in any lifestyle setting. Perfection! The Sunbury Bed is a great example of what the Green Leaf Award is all about. Gat Creek sources all of their wood locally and it is certified by the Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers Inc. (AHMI). They are also working to make their factory more energy efficient by switching to LED lights and they installed a biomass boiler system that uses saw dust to fuel their operation. They also track 100% of their waste stream and monitor everything going in and out of the factory."

Major Collections

Linea Collection By Otto & Moore Design, ISFD and Bernhardt Design Team for Bernhardt

Judge’s Comments: "This collection is simply stunning and current in today's design world. Modern Rustic is not easy to pull off but the Linea collection did it; offering a careful balance between modern and primal rustic influences. The choice of cerused oak, metal and marble give way to a beautiful rustic modern style. The placement of the wraparound metal really enhances the modern style. The hardware choices are right on, we love that the sizes vary on the pieces. The finishes are calming and appealing. The wide selection of pieces offers the consumer the option for just how far they want to go in either stylistic direction. The upholstery pieces are sleek and angular and really compliment the whole collection."
