"Have you tested all of your outdoor lights recently?"

Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer. People break out their grills, open their pools and spend time out on their patios and porches. While most people won't forget to buy their hot dog buns and mustard, they might forget to check their outdoor lighting, which can put a damper on the party.

Here's why you should be asking all your lighting customers about their outdoor lighting this May.

Building Customer Trust

Over the cold winter months, a lot can happen to outdoor lighting fixtures. Bulbs may go out or break, and the fixtures themselves may be cracked or in need of repair. It's not always easy to see these problems from a kitchen window, and many homeowners don't notice a problem until they go to turn on a light or happen to notice when a security light doesn't turn on.

This can be a security problem if this happens to a timed security light. One of the great benefits of timed security lighting is that after the timer is set, homeowners don't have to think about it. The problem with that, however, is that they don't always notice a light has gone out right away, and when they do notice, it may be too late.

Phrasing the question of outdoor lighting in this way frames it as a concern rather than a sales pitch. You're reminding the customer of a maintenance chore that is easy to overlook. You can use this opportunity to explain what they should be checking for year-round to ensure that their fixtures remain in good condition, and you can answer any questions they might have about LED lights or maintenance concerns.

It may not seem like much, but asking this question is another way to show customers you care. If they haven't checked their outdoor lights, you can bet it will be one of the first things they do when they get home.

Potential For a Sale

Asking this question may not result in an immediate sale, but it does get consumers thinking about their outdoor lighting. Let's say your consumer goes home and discovers the fixture in the backyard needs to be replaced. Your customer is more likely to call you or return to your store to follow up and get the fixture replaced because you've already built a trusting relationship.

This also opens the door to explain the different facets of outdoor lighting to customers. They may be thinking about changing, upgrading or adding to their outdoor lighting anyway. This is your chance to show off your expertise and explain the different outdoor lighting selections your store offers.

It's also a good time to bring up security lighting, which can do more than deter burglars. Some security lighting systems can detect animal movement, which is great for gardeners looking to keep rabbits out of their vegetables. Having a system in place also helps children and other guests coming to your home after dark.

Now that summer is nearly here, outdoor lighting will become a bigger concern for consumers. Make sure your showroom is ahead of the curve by asking about outdoor lighting this month.
