There was a time when we loathed all things from the 70s. To be fair, the decade had its share of style busts. Raise your hand if images of shag carpet (in the bathroom), inflatable furniture and the overuse of Chintz are permanently burned into your nightmares. For sure, these perversions give the decade a bad rap. But there’s plenty of good that came from the decade of decadence, and the generous use of natural materials like rattan is at the top of the list.

Rattan continues to be a key element of the latest incarnation of boho chic (or resort style, as Pinterest's 2018 home decor predictions tell us), which favors personal style over formula. Check it out: These rattan pendants can add some groovy vibes to just about any setting.

Maybe it’s the laid-back attitude or the sun-kissed skin. Maybe it’s the all movie stars. But who really cares? There’s just something about California girls, and the Laguna Pendant from Regina Andrew Design is right there with them.

Made from natural materials, this oversized fixture is easy, breezy and effortlessly cool — a style we saw at Maison & Objet last January. Style it as a statement piece in a sunny breakfast nook with fab frond-patterned wallpaper or in an entryway over an antique area rug.

Large Cordial hanging pendant with a loosely woven rattan shade from Selamat DesignsLarge Cordial Hanging Pendant — Selamat Designs

Who doesn’t love lighting named after liquor especially when said designs are top shelf? Part of a series of cocktail-themed styles, the Large Cordial pendant from Selamat features a loosely woven rattan shade that’s admittedly more about looking good than filtering any light.

This hanging pendant would be rad over a sturdy farmhouse table in the dining room as well as in a more minimalistic room with a stark gray and white palette.

Leave it to Palecek to come up with a natural rattan pendant that embodies refined island cool — something designers like Kenneth Cobonpue have in spades. Palecek has been making intriguing home furnishings with natural, renewable resources for more than 40 years.

The company’s Bahamas hanging pendant features hand-bent rattan held together with leather bindings. Given its large stature (the bottom of the bell is 36” in diameter), Bahamas could make a big statement in a small living room or bedroom.

Ay Illuminate gets by with a little help from its friends. The Dutch company turns to nature for inspiration and to the expertise of artisans in Asia and Africa for instruction on creating organic-shaped lighting like this Rattan Bell.

We love this design for a Modern Farmhouse kitchen. Hang them in a pair above a kitchen island countertop as part of a boho accessories mix.

Basket bell pendant with a wicker/rattan shade from Currey & Co.Basket Pendant — Currey and Company

Currey and Company’s Basket pendant, a hand-woven rattan shade, may seem simple enough, but don’t underestimate its ability to hang with a sophisticated crowd. Install this unassuming style anywhere that could use a bit of rustic charm.

Whether that’s the bedroom of a quaint seaside cottage or in a white-washed industrial loft with big windows and lots of light, the Basket pendant makes us feel cozy and close to home.
