Shay Geyer of IBB Design and Scot Meacham Wood of SMW Design shared their design tips in a talk at the January Las Vegas Market. The talk hosted by Nourison and moderated by James Swan of Million Dollar Decorating centered on “How to Design a Winning Room Around a Rug.”

Geyer and Meacham Wood covered topics including creating concepts, customizing a rug and color balancing. On creating concepts, Meacham Wood said it’s key to ask the right questions.

“It’s a lot of conversations with the client – what the room needs to do, not just functionally, but how they are going to live in it. To what level of formality, durability or functionality that the room needs,” he said.

Geyer said she always puts together a spreadsheet for clients to detail the concept and price points of items in every room.

When customizing a rug, Meacham Wood says he pays attention to the size and shape of the room. If it’s a non-regularly shaped room or not a standard size, a 12’ x 18’ rug is needed before customizing it to the space.

To get the color right on a customized rug, Geyer always starts with Pantone colors and finds out which ones the client is drawn to.

“A room can be gorgeous if the rug is the statement and the upholstery is very neutral around it,” Geyer said. “Then you sort of nod back to the colors in the rug and other aspects of the room.”
