Wayfair is an ecommerce site with one of the world's largest online selections of furniture, home furnishings, decor and goods, including more than ten million products from over 10,000 suppliers. Users can purchase products from departments like Furniture, Outdoor, Rugs and more. Wayfair brands include Birch Lane, Joss & Main, AllModern and Perigold.
The company was founded in 2002 by Steve Conine and Niraj Shah, who met as high school students attending a summer program at Cornell University. They both went on to attend Cornell, and during their final semester of college, they enrolled in a class on entrepreneurism, which sparked a business plan that turned into their first company and, ultimately, became the foundation for founding and building several businesses in the technology sector. As of March 31, 2018, Wayfair employs more than 8,700 people and is headquartered in Boston with operations throughout North America and Europe.
For small retailers in the lighting and home furnishings industry, Wayfair is viewed as a nemesis. For interior designers though, the website can be a viable business partner.
Wayfair is doubling down on its business-to-business program. In January 2018, the company rebranded its trade services and business offerings as Wayfair Professional. The improved and expanded resource gives trade partners, including interior designers, access to a huge selection of furniture and home furnishings as well as a dedicated customer service team. The program is also full of sweet perks like tax-exempt buying, free shipping (for orders over $49) and members-only discounts.
